3 weeks travelling by train from Toronto to VancouverToronto - Winnipeg - Edmonton - Jasper - Kamloops - Vancouver |
Day 2 (Sunday) - Toronto (Mayfair B&B)Insomnia stinks! I seem to remember I had this problem last time I came to Toronto. (It went away after a couple of days). I've probably had half an hour's sleep all night. First it was too hot. Then I couldn't get off to sleep. Then it got light outside.Fortunately I had planned for this. I know my body dislikes east-west jetlag (and doesn't seem bothered by west-east jetlag), so Toronto was planned as somewhere to get over that. Hopefully by Tuesday I should be OK. Breakfast consisted of pink grapefruit (which I discovered I don't like), pancakes, bacon and a delicious maple & orange syrup. Those pancakes are deceptively filling, although I'm not so sure about putting sweet syrup with bacon. Oh well, a new experience. There are two couples staying here at the moment. The younger couple went back to bed after breakfast (as did I). Unfortunately I didn't manage to get any more sleep. I have no idea whether their intentions were sleep-related. I went for a walk around High Park, which is a large park a few minutes walk from the B&B. Saw a few black squirrels (something I've never seen in England). Today is cooler than yesterday, although it's still hotter and more humid than I would like. Called my parents while I was in the park to let them know I've arrived safely. Called Paul and arranged for him to come around at 3pm. Came back to the B&B and had another go at trying to sleep. Failed. Paul duly arrived (having been at work) and we headed out to his home - about 45 minutes drive away. Traffic was slow along the lake front because there was an airshow in progress. I had heard the planes flying about whilst walking in the park earlier. Paul and Kelly have a very nice home on a new housing estate. Kelly gave me a quick tour. I'm envious of their house compared to my small place. Explored the local shopping mall for a short while (turned out they were closing early because of it being Sunday). We went out to a thai restaurant for a meal (the original plan had been a sushi restaurant, but they were full). I think Paul and Kelly were hoping to go to a bar or shops after the meal, but I was too tired and still jetlagged, so they dropped me back at the B&B so I can have another go at sleeping.
