3 weeks travelling by train from Toronto to VancouverToronto - Winnipeg - Edmonton - Jasper - Kamloops - Vancouver |
Day 8 (Saturday) - Winnipeg(Twin Pillars B&B)Had a restless night.. My digestion isn't feeling too good, I hope it's nothing serious. I was also a bit anxious about not being able to contact Vance - since I'm supposed to be staying with his parents in two days time. After breakfast, the owners very kindly let me look up Vance's phone number using White Pages on the net and everything is now sorted out.It turns out that Vance had managed to transpose two digits in his area code. I tried calling him from downtown, but I got his answering machine. Still, that's a vast improvement on what I was getting before. Today I visited Winnipeg's IMAX movie theatre. I love IMAX, and it's been a few years since I last went to one. I saw three films. A T-Rex film which was a bit too Disney-esque for my tastes (good effects, although there weren't many sequences with dinosaurs in them). The second film was called Island of the Sharks and was largely filmed underwater (obviously). This seemed to be well suited to the IMAX format. The last film was called Extreme and featured windsurfers, surfers, skiers, climbers and other assorted nutters doing things you'd never catch me doing. Very impressive use of IMAX. Very well filmed, and by far the best film out of the three. In finding the IMAX I also found a bigger shopping arcade called Portage Place. Not only is there an IMAX, there's also a regular cinema there too. Portage Place is actually linked to Eatons by a raised walkway (which is why I didn't find it before - I didn't go into Eatons, since department stores tend not to interest me). The other walkway out of Portage Place links to The Bay (another department store). In the evening I called Vance again (he had left a message at the B&B while I was out, saying he would be in from 6-9, his time). That means he got the email I sent from the B&B. Had a quick chat with Vance and everything is set for Monday. Sounds like we're going to Fort Edmonton the day I arrive (since I arrive in the morning, and Vance is free that morning). I was actually feeling hungry this evening, despite the large amount of popcorn I ate at the IMAX, so I went and tracked down the Italian restaurant I had been told about by the owners' son. A very nice place called Lux Solé. Nice food, although a bit too much of it for me. I hate to waste good food. Another advertisement caught my eye today - this time on a hoarding. It's for milk, and shows a disgruntled Cookie Monster surrounded by cookies. The caption simply says "Got Milk?"
