Serious Stuff
Sygate Personal Firewall
Although a software firewall is not as good as having a dedicated hardware firewall, in my opinion it is better than not having one at all.  Once you've installed one, you may be surprised to see how many people are trying to connect to your machine.  Previously you would have been completely unaware of all this.  What's more, Sygate Personal Firewall free for personal use.

ZoneAlarm
Another software personal firewall - also free for personal use.  Not as configurable as Sygate Personal Firewall, but easier for a novice to get up and running.

Fun Stuff
Sach's Marine Screensaver
The best 3D screensaver I have found so far.  Photo-realistic textures mapped onto 3D fish.  And if you have Elsa's 3D Revelator glasses, the effect is even better - a stereo 3D fish tank inside your computer monitor.

SimSig
My girlfriend really doesn't understand what this is all about.  SimSig is a simulation of a modern railway signalbox.  The screen displays are very close to what the real systems look for.  In fact, RailTrack use an enhanced version of SimSig for training signalbox operators.

Microsoft Flight Simulator
Although I have no interest in learning to fly a real plane, Microsoft Flight Sim is one of those programs I enjoy sitting down and "playing" with.  There's no violence involved, just the fun of doing something which would be too expensive to do for real.

Trainz
Much cheaper than owning a real model railway, and you don't need a big attic or garage to use it.

Crid's Creations
Frax
This is a rather simple fractal landscape generator, written in Java.  It should run in most Java-enabled web browsers (I've tested it in Netscape and IE, both on PCs and Macs).

Airport Information Board
My first stab at writing a DirectX program.  This is also my first brush with C for a long LONG time.  Thankfully I've got to grips with the intricacies of pointers this time around.  This program requires DirectX version 5 or later.
