Crid's Favourite TV Shows & Films

TVShows
Red Green
An excellent comedy show that I discovered while in Canada (but which, sadly, is not available in the UK at the moment).  Set in the North Woods of Ontario, it explores the world of men who have an unhealthy obsession with DIY, power tools, duct tape, cars, fishing and (occasionally) explosions.  Red's "Handyman Corner" is one of my favourite parts of the show - something like Scrapheap/Junkyard Wars gone wrong.  A lot of behind-the-scenes work obviously goes into this particular bit of the show.

Mystery Science Theater 3000
This is one of those shows which I discovered by accident, while channel hopping one night.  Mike Nelson and his robot pals are forced to watch the world's worst movies.  Their only hope of surviving is to add their own witty comments and dialogue to the film.  The show can sometimes be a bit hit-and-miss, but when it hits its target, it is hilarious.

Yes Minister/Yes Prime Minister
An 80s show about the life of a government minister (who later becomes Prime Minister).  An excellent cast and an excellent script combine to make an excellent show.  The satire of the whole thing may be uncomfortably close to the truth, but to me that's part of the appeal.  Bernard's nitpicking of grammatical errors is another aspect of the show which I particularly like.

Discovery Channel
OK, so it's not a specific show.  I have a great love of documentaries, and Discovery Channel has a good selection of them.

Films
Contact
This is my favourite film of all time.  Based on a book by Carl Sagan, it follows a first-contact situation.  Unlike many Hollywood films, this isn't about invading aliens and death rays.  Instead, it tackles the philosophical and religious implications of such an event.  Although the film differs a bit from the book, it's still an excellent adaption.

2010
While 2001 is an excellent film, it does suffer from a slow pace.  For me, 2010 was a much better film.  A the name suggests, it follows the events 9 years after 2001.  Discovery is in a decaying orbit around Jupiter, and the US and Russia both want to send a mission to Discovery to find out what happened.  But the Russians are going to get there first...

Love's Labour's Lost
Mixing Shakespeare and 1930's music, this is a film which you will either love or hate.  Many critics hated it, and it didn't do very well at the box office.  I, on the other hand, love it.  OK, so Alicia Silverstone isn't the world's best singer, but that doesn't bother me.  Timothy Spall makes up for it with his wonderful rendition of "I get a kick out of you" - complete with thick Spanish accent.

Mystery Science Theatre 3000 - The Movie
An excellent introduction to MST3K.  It's pretty much a normal TV episode except that there's a bigger budget (so the sets look better) and the film that Mike and the robots have to watch is actually quite good (This Island Earth).  The comments from Mike and the robots seem to be funnier than in an average TV episode.  Or perhaps I've watched this film too many times.

Clue
Based on the board game "Clue" (or "Cluedo" as it is known in England), this film has all the characters you would expect.  This film didn't do very well at the box office, despite the number of big names in the cast list.  Perhaps people were put off by the idea of a film based on a board game.
